This is the first in a series of very short conversations with our Principle Dentist, Dr. Ash Champaneri where we’ll cover a range of topics which we hope will be of interest to you! In this piece, Ash shares a few insights on how he’s taking oral health seriously for his two boys; Kian and Shay.

  1. Your twins are currently teething, so how do you overcome the teething pains?

“Teething pains are overcome by using lidocaine hydrochloride teething gel otherwise known as “teething gel” which is made by several brands such as Dentinox and Bonjela. We also use teething rings which baby’s can chew on, these can either be attached to toys or kept in the fridge and given to play with as necessary”

  1. How long do you brush their teeth for?

“I tend to brush their teeth for about 30 seconds to 1 minute on average”

  1. Is there a particular kind of toothbrush and toothpaste that you use?

“I use children toothpaste which is 1000ppm and therefore can be swallowed and children’s toothbrush suitable for 0-2 years. This has a very soft, small head with a handle big enough for an adult to hold”

  1. Is there any particular technique you use to brush their teeth?

“The technique is to gently brush around the baby teeth using a small grain of rice size amount of toothpaste”

  1. What general advise for new parents could you leave us with?

“Generally try to brush their teeth once a day. Brush before they eat and when the baby is in a good mood using a minty toothpaste so they can get used to it as well as enjoying the taste”

Thanks Ash!
